The Grand Rapids Alumni Chapter was founded on Thursday, May 25, 1972. The ten charter members were: Hershal Turner, Ruben Smartt, Sylvester Jones, Sylvester Smith, Riccardo Johnson, Clarence Carter, Maurice Coleman, Earnest Murphy, Jimmy Nixon and Ron Mabin. Brother Noel "Nino" Webley was instrumental in solidifying the foundation of the Grand Rapids Alumni Chapter chapter in 1968. However, Brother Webley was not a charter member. He remained active in the chapter until he transitioned to the Golden Shores on February 19, 2021. Grand Rapids Alumni Chapter's first Polemarch was Ricardo Johnson. The second Polemarch of the Grand Rapids Alumni Chapter was Brother Clyde Poag. At the 90th Northern Province meeting held virtual (due to the global pandemic Covid 19), hosted by Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti-Inkster Alumni Chapter, Sigma Chapter and Delta Nu chapter in April 2022, Bro. Clyde Poag was awarded the Robert L. Gordon Award. This is the highest honor and award of the Mighty Northern Province.
The current membership, like the charter members, consists of professional men who are doctors, engineers, dentists, attorneys, clergy, certified public accountants, educators, government officials, entrepreneurs, and a host of other occupations and professions.
The Grand Rapids Alumni Chapter seeks to provide a positive atmosphere by which our members can achieve in their respective fields and hold high the true ideals of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The Grand Rapids Alumni Chapter is deeply committed to our youth and continues to encourage education and higher learning through scholarship and tutorial programs. The Grand Rapids Alumni Chapter will continue to work with other organizations to better the economic and social conditions of African-Americans in the Greater Grand Rapids area. In conclusion, it is the mission of this Chapter to be a vanguard in paving the way for African-Americans to achieve while humbly being of service to our God, our Community, and our Fraternity.
The Grand Rapids Alumni Chapter is part of the Mighty Northern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and supports both national and local charities. One of the finest attributes of the Grand Rapids Alumni Chapter is our ability to maintain "that Good ole Kappa Spirit" while staying authentic to our mission of BROTHERHOOD, ACHIEVEMENT and SERVICE.
